Description

These Chocolate Buttermilk Donuts with Vanilla Glaze are baked rather than fried. Their tender, cake-like texture makes for a delicious morning treat or fun dessert. Homemade donuts are simple to make and baking in a donut pan makes clean up easy.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Donuts

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup high quality unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup plus 1 TBSP granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 TBSP unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Vanilla Glaze

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 34 TBSP milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

For Donuts

  1. Place rack in upper 1/3 of oven and preheat to 350 degrees
  2. Spray a donut pan with cooking spray
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, unsweetened cocoa powder and salt
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the buttermilk, sugar, egg, butter and vanilla until well combined
  5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until just combined
  6. Spoon or pipe the batter into the donut pan, filling 3/4 of the way full
  7. Bake 8-10 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean
  8. Remove from oven and allow to cool 5 minutes in the pan
  9. Fully cool on a wire rack before frosting

For Frosting

  1. In a medium bowl mix together powdered sugar, vanilla, salt and milk. If glaze is too thick add more milk one tablespoon at a time until reaching desired consistency
  2. Dip the tops of each donut into the glaze and return to wire rack to set
  3. Top with sprinkles if desired
